The Dangers of Internet Dating
Finding love online may sound like a dream come true – convenient, effective, and even romantic. However, your internet dating life won’t be successful if you don’t take any precautions. There may be hundreds of happily-ever-afters that started online, but there are also some horror stories that serve as a warning to those who aren’t careful. Here are some things you might want to watch out for while looking for love on the internet:
Some people won’t be 100% truthful. Although it’s impossible to find someone who’s never lied in their lifetime, a person’s opportunity to lie becomes greater on the internet. This is because you can be more anonymous when you’re online. Be cautious when you’re emailing or chatting with someone online and they seem to have conflicting information about themselves.
Some people will try to get your personal information. People who are trying to obtain sensitive information about you aren’t going to ask you upfront “What’s your credit card number?†True, they may try to do that, but most people have enough common sense not to give away their personal information to anyone. Watch what you send your internet dates – whether it’s through chatting, email, or photos. You might accidentally mention that your wealthy grandmother died, and your internet date can assume that you received inheritance. You might send a photo that contains your car’s license number, or clues about where you live or work. If your internet date keeps pushing you to give out sensitive information, see it as a red flag and walk away.
It’s more likely to experience misunderstandings and miscommunications online. Since you can’t see someone’s facial expression or hear someone’s voice when you’re chatting or emailing, it may be hard for you to decipher what the other person means. You might be taking the internet relationship seriously, while the other person sees it as an inconsequential fling. It can get especially disappointing when you learn that you’ve misinterpreted some things that the other person said. You can work around this problem by trying voice chat or webcam conversations before you meet face-to-face.
If you feel like internet dating is the best route for you, go ahead and give it a try. Just make your privacy and security your top priority. Be aware of any hunches you may have, and watch out for any possible warning signs. After all, it’s always better to be safe than sorry on the internet.
